With thousands of tourists heading into the Nilgiris, the administration has introduced route diversions, parking controls, and entry rules from May 1, 2026, to keep traffic manageable and the experience smoother. Here’s a simple, no-confusion guide to help you plan.
Ooty E-Pass : Don’t Skip This
Before anything else – yes, you need an e-pass if you’re entering Ooty by your own vehicle.
This applies to:
- Private cars
- Rental vehicles
- Vans and maxi cabs
If you’re coming by bus or train, you don’t have to worry about it. At the check posts, vehicles without an e-pass can be stopped, so it’s something you’ll want to arrange in advance rather than deal with on the road.
Coming from Mettupalayam? Expect a Different Route
The usual ghat road access is regulated. If you’re driving up to Ooty, you won’t be taking the direct stretch all the way. Instead, vehicles are diverted at Katteri Junction, and you’ll be routed through:
- Mettupalayam → Burliyar → Katteri Junction → Selas → Kendhala → Katteri Dam → Ketti Palada → Kollimalai → Lovedale → Lovedale Railway Station → Police Station Junction → Gandhinagar → Manjanakorai → Fernhill → Ooty
It’s a longer route, but it helps distribute traffic and reduce bottlenecks.
Heading Towards Gudalur, Theppakadu or Mudhumalai
If your plan is to continue beyond Ooty towards Gudalur or Mudumalai, vehicles are diverted earlier at Lovedale Junction.
- Mettupalayam → Burliyar → Katteri Junction → Selas → Kendhala → Katteri Dam → Ketti Palada → Kollimalai → Lovedale → Lovedale Railway Station → Police Station Junction → Gandhinagar → Manjanakorai → Fernhill → Kandhal → Fingerpost → Gudalur
This is for vehicles NOT entering Ooty, but going further west towards Gudalur.
Coming from Coonoor or Kotagiri? You Can’t Drive Into Town
This is where many travellers get caught off guard. If you’re arriving in a tourist bus or maxi cab:
- From Coonoor → you’ll be stopped at the Ooty Aavin parking area
- From Kotagiri → vehicles are stopped at the Ooty Government Arts College temporary parking
From these points, you’ll need to switch to government shuttle buses to reach tourist spots inside Ooty. These are TNSTC-operated circular buses running every 30 minutes, covering all major tourist attractions across the town.
If you’re coming by car, you can enter Ooty town, but expect diversions, traffic control, and limited parking during peak hours.
Coming from From Gudalur to Ooty
Tourist buses and maxi cabs coming from Gudalur won’t be allowed into the town directly either. They’ll be parked at the HPF Golf Course Road area, and from there, shuttle buses take over.
If you’re in a light vehicle traveling from Gudalur towards Thalaikundha, the route continues via:
- Thalaikundha → Mattam → Kozhipannai → Puthumandhu → St. Stephen’s Church
Leaving Ooty? One Route Only
When heading down towards Mettupalayam, there’s a strict rule:
- All tourist vehicles must go via the Kotagiri route
- Even if you came up through Coonoor, you cannot return via the Coonoor–Burliyar road. That route is not allowed for tourist vehicles during this period.
- Some vehicles may be redirected through Wellington, Black Bridge, and Kattabettu — but the final exit remains via Kotagiri.
Heavy Vehicles : Daytime Ban
To reduce congestion inside town:
- Heavy vehicles are not allowed from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM
- Only essential supply vehicles (milk, fuel, cooking gas) are permitted during this time
Plan Before You Go
This isn’t the time to “figure it out on the way.” A little planning goes a long way here.
